Mentoring and Workshops

Do you have a Quilt in your head, or sketched on a piece of paper, or ripped from a magazine, that wants you to make it? Are you worried about your ability to recreate it?
Maybe it’s the fabric choices, or the pattern drafting, or the technical skill necessary to complete this Quilt as you envision it that has you stopped.
I am offering my services for ANY or ALL of these problems.
Whatever help you need from start to finish or just a step on the way, I am available to shepherd you through. Give me a call 416-699-2162.        $25. per hour

As I have been teaching for so many years I can teach an immense variety of classes, including Watercolour, Appliqué, Celtic, etc.

If there is a specific technique you wish to learn please let me know, and if I don’t feel able to teach it myself I can find you a teacher who can.

I offer several lectures & full day workshops:

Why do we Quilt? 1 hour An exploration of our addiction…….a reasoned answer to the above question using humour and some thought-provoking realities.

Traditional Durham Quilting

1 hour. A history lesson about the origins of our white-on-white quilts going back to the north of England in the early 1900’s, using slides and samples to augment the lecture. (Also available as a day-long workshop, see below)

Judging your own Quilt before someone does it for you
1 hour. Are you thinking about entering a quilt into competition? Let me explain, using various handouts, what a judge is looking for, so that you can pay attention to the details ahead of time.

Durham Quilting
We will spend the day immersed in History, whilst you trace from the many, many quilting patterns I had copied from the centuries-old Quilts in the Museums of England. We will then discuss the planning, designing and execution of a full sized White-on-White Quilt, and you should go home with a cushion cover to get you started on this beautiful expression of our art form. All levels.

Appliqué Every Which Way
Are you confused about the different ways appliqué has been presented to you? Well, come and play, … we will work on a wallhanging using at least four different methods, whilst we discuss variations of each. You will go home with a better understanding of which one suits your projects and your temperament. All levels.

Simple Accuracy for a Better Quilt

Starting from an idea or a pattern, this workshop will walk you through step by step, to finish with a flat, neat quilt top. No puckers, no fudging. Bring along your “Frustrations” and you will leave this class with the answers to your questions. All levels. Refresh your basic skills with an emphasis on accuracy!

This Hand Piecing course is not only a refresher for experienced quilters, but also a perfect introduction for the absolute beginner. All levels.

Classic Quilt making
– of every kind. This includes Samplers, Mariners’ Compass, Stars, Block-Of-The-Month clubs, Primitives, and Appliqués. Being a traditional quilter, I teach both hand-piecing and machine, as well as hand-quilting. All levels

Using colour, design, shading and movement within a wallhanging, this teaches more of the abstract use of fabric in order to create anything that can be visualized. All levels.

This teaches how to finish a quilt with an appropriate border, whether it be strips, pieced, appliqued, or incorporated into the quilt design. All levels

Fees — To be arranged when booking a workshop.
